the silk is beautiful

Filed under: crafts, fibre art, knitting — lothie @ 5:20 pm

The silk yarn I'm working with is really lovely. It feels awesome to work with. Unfortunately it's also easy to make mistakes. I'm finding, however, that they don't show. The only other annoying thing is that the yarn twists quite a lot. I have to be careful about untwisting it because it can break. So it's definitely picky.

But god, it's so beautiful, and I think I'd like to work with this yarn more. Maybe make another moebius out of this at some point.

Ryu's and my mom both are using it too. Heh heh, I'm converting the planet!

silky feeling

Filed under: crafts, fibre art, knitting — lothie @ 9:51 am

I have yet to do the beading on the moebius scarf I made, but in the meantime I've started over the shawl I was making with recylcled silk sari yarn (here's the yarn I'm talking about). I felt the pattern I was using is specified incorrectly and so I wanted to start it over and get it right (I'd only done a few rows on it). I'm still not quite sure about the pattern with this yarn, but we'll see.

The silk feels wonderful. I'm sure the shawl, when it's done, is going to feel absolutely awesome against my skin.

moby us

I've finished the moebius scarf i was making for a friend. Or rather, I've finished the knitting on it. I still need to sew the beads on the edge and then sew the ends together. I'm hoping to have it completely done by the end of the week, and then I'll take pics.

working toward an album

Filed under: songs, writing — lothie @ 6:46 am

I have what I think are ten fairly good songs — actually, eleven — and therefore I'm thinking that I'm going to start creating melodies for them and work toward recording them. Three of them, which were written about 20 years ago, already have melodies (Bad Weather, Love Is Real, and New England Autumn), but I need to create melodies for the other eight.

I would love it if by the end of 2006 I had a professionally mastered CD. But I'd be happy if it were even just a homemade one that I distributed myself. I'm really, really excited.

I'm going to start thinking up album titles….SQUEE!

silky goodness

Filed under: crafts, fibre art, knitting — lothie @ 10:05 am

I’m a bit over 1/3 done with the knitting on the moebius scarf I’m making; the Silk Garden is just very easy to work with. I’m hoping to finish it in the next week or two, and then edge it with beads, and send it by the end of the month.

i just have to say

Filed under: fibre art, knitting — lothie @ 11:27 am

I just have to say that the Noro Silk Garden yarn is a JOY to work with. *happy sigh* I've done several inches on the new moebius scarf, and it's just BEAUTIFUL.

I've found a pattern that I'd love to do someday…a "poet shirt" style sweater using soy silk/wool yarn (though any worsted weight is fine). It's way beyond my capability at this point but oh is it lovely.

current projects

Filed under: fibre art, knitting — lothie @ 11:20 am

I was casting about for something to make for a friend of mine, when I saw this cool moebius headscarf kinda thing. I first did a proof of concept in Lion Brand Moonlight Mohair, in the Glacier Bay color. I think it turned out very well, but when I actually saw the yarn that the project calls for (Noro's Silk Garden), it made me laugh, because the total cost of the yarn was about the same. Still, I like the Moonlight Mohair version and I'm going to keep it as it matches the proof of concept sweater I'm knitting (they both have elements of Egyptian Blue).

Anyway, I bought the Silk Garden in two colors: the blue/green/turquoise that the pattern book shows, for me, and a deep purple/crimson for my friend. The scarf calls for beading on the edges, and if I do that, I'll use purple teardrop beads. I finished the POC last night and started the one for my friend; I'm hoping it goes quickly as I was hoping to mail it to her at the end of the month.

My current projects as of today are:

  • Moebius scarf in Silk Garden (purple/crimson), for a friend
  • "Prayer" shawl in recycled silk (mostly reddish), for myself
  • Simple sweatshirt-style sweater in a sort of Egyptian blue acrylic as a proof of concept, for myself

Next up (after the moebius for my friend):

  • Two scarves, each made out of a single skein of bamboo and/or soy silk, for two other friends

I've decided to use this blog for my creative stuff: crafts, art, writing, blah blah blah. I don't really have a blog specifically for that (other than my writing wiki, if that counts), so that'll be cool. I knew I'd figure out what to use this for!

Now I just have to start working on Kitty Dreams, which is my creativity site. ^_^
